Workplace Culture, with Zenger Farm and Urban Grange as Employee Resources Company Adds Farm Camp Scholarships to its 'Bridges to Better Health' Wellness Program

Starting this month, all new employees of Bridgetown Natural Foods will begin their company orientation on the farm next door. While learning the protocol for mixing, baking and packaging organic granolas and snacks for the natural foods industry is a priority, Bridgetown co-owners Dan and Kelly Klock want every employee to immediately gain access to Zenger Farm and its new Urban Grange, and to see it as an integral part of the company's wellness program, "Bridges to Better Health."

Bridgetown Natural Foods supports the Urban Grange ground breaking

Zenger Farm, a former dairy that has become a training ground for urban farmers and a link to healthy local food for some of the city's poorest neighborhoods, broke ground this past week on a 6,600 square-foot education center, commercial kitchen and office.
Construction is expected to begin in two weeks, with completion anticipated for spring 2015. About $2 million of the project's $2.3 million price tag has already been raised, including major funding from food companies such as Bob's Red Mill, New Seasons and Bridgetown Natural Foods.

Bridgetown Natural Foods had been making a variety of natural and whole-grain products for several years when the owners, husband-and-wife team Dan Klock and Kelly Flatley Klock, realized many of the employees didn't know how to use some of the core ingredients - oats, quinoa bran - in their own cooking. So this part spring, Bridgetown, based in Southeast Portland, launched an employee-wellness program aimed at incentivizing line workers to eat more nutritious meals.

The focal point is a voluntary on-site cooking class held once a quarter. Participating employees are paid in "Bridgetown Dough," tokens redeemable at the Lents International Farmers Market or a biweekly on-site farm stand with produce provided by local growers, including neighbor Zenger Farm.

Zenger Wins SBO Award With Support From Bridgetown Natural Foods

November 18, 2013

Zenger Farm, is a font of good vibes. News broke in May that Zenger Farm operators, who run Portland's premier urban educational agricultural facility, want to double their educational capacity. Zenger wants to open a new 7,760-square-foot structure dubbed an "Urban Grange" at its Southeast Portland site.

The effort, which will cost $1.9 million, will help inform visitors about the advantages of eating healthy food. Early reports are that the fundraising is going well in advance of next spring's scheduled groundbreaking. Zenger's team has raised $700,000 from such backers as Bob's Red Mill - which contributed $250,000 - as well as Bridgetown Natural Foods ($150,000) and New Seasons Market ($125,000).
